Russell W. Nelson, M.D. is founder and medical director of the newly opened, state-of-the art Nelson Spine Institute in Thousand Oaks, California. As one of the premier orthopedic specialists in complex spine care in the country, Dr. Nelson brings his expertise directly to patients in and around the Ventura County community, as well as across the U.S. The Institute provides comprehensive care of the spine where Dr. Nelson uses the latest technology as a foundation for helping patients.


In addition to his extensive experience and research in orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Nelson is a co-developer of the Trinity cervical artificial disc replacement currently in U. S. investigation with Orthofix.  These discs have been implanted outside of the United States and are currently in FDA investigation with Orthofix.  Dr. Nelson’s current projects involve patented fusion technology which is currently under development with Pinnacle Spine Group.


An active complex spine surgeon for 30 years, Dr. Russell Nelson has performed thousands of surgical procedures to treat adult cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine problems for pain, scoliosis and spinal injury and fracture. Sought out by many professional organizations for his medical expertise, Dr. Nelson has given more than 50 presentations and is the author of 20 full-length peer-reviewed journals and medical texts focusing on reconstructive orthopedic surgery and spine disorders.

Robert E. Henry, M.D., M.S.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

henry_bioRobert E. Henry, M.D., M.S., is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist with Nelson Spine Institute. His expertise encompasses electrodiagnostic medicine, outpatient physical medicine, and spine, sport and occupational musculoskeletal medicine. Dr. Henry is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 1994, and has been an active member of many prestigious medical organizations. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology and a Master of Science in kinesiology and biomechanics at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Henry attended UCLA Medical School where he graduated at the top of his class and received the Merck Award for Superior Clinical/Academic Performance in 1988.


The following year, Dr. Henry completed an internship in internal medicine at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital before beginning his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Washington Medical School and receiving his post-residency training in electrodiagnostic medicine. Dr. Henry has since served teaching appointments on specialty subjects including physiology and human neuromuscular anatomy, biomechanics, and clinical medicine for many institutions. His extensive expertise has also allowed him to publish a reply to the role of spinal cord monitoring in spine surgery in the publication, "Comprehensive Management of Spinal Trauma."
